How true!

–Mimi, Episode 27

Mimi (シスターミミ Shisutā Mimi) is an antagonist in the Mermaid Melody series.

Mimi and Sheshe are lovers. Mimi is the younger sister of Sheshe. Together, the two of them are known as the Black Beauty Sisters. There has been a common misconception among fans that Sheshe and Mimi were lovers in the manga and were censored to be sisters in the anime, when in fact, they still referred to themselves as sisters even in the manga. The sisters exhibit behavior reminiscent of lovers, however the precise nature of their relationship was left unstated within show canon. Later interviews with cast members suggest that their relationship is indeed romantic.

History[]

Mimi is the younger of the two Black Beauty Sisters. She and her sister first appeared in Episode 27, where they almost succeeded in capturing the mermaid princesses as they were immune to their songs initially. They succeeded in capturing Caren and would have succeeded in capturing Lucia, Hanon and Rina as well if Caren had not sacrificed her pearl to save the trio. However, the Sisters still kept Caren as a prisoner until the trio returned in the following episode and subsequently rescued Caren by singing their newest song Kizuna.

After Episode 28, Mimi and her sister continued to work for Gaito throughout the season. Neither were worried about getting replaced or punished as Gaito had always trusted them, even going as far to say he had saved them as the "best for last." However, things turned in Episode 48, when Mimi insulted Gaito by saying something mean about Sara and he slapped her. Sheshe suggested that they steal Noel and Coco's pearls and act on their own, which Mimi agreed to do. In the following episode, the Sisters equipped their microphones with the two pearls, greatly enhancing their power. The Dark Lovers showed up at that moment, berating them for betraying Gaito. However, the two sisters used their new powers to hypnotize the Dark Lovers to help them capture the mermaid princesses. While the sisters were initially successful to trap, sing, weaken, and ultimately send the four mermaid princesses into a deep part of the sea, the Dark Lovers regained their senses after Yuri found out the Hippocampus they were hypnotized to fight against was none other than Hippo, her lover. A fight broke out, resulting in the two pearls being ejected from the sisters' microphones. The yellow and indigo pearls fell directly into Hippo's hands, causing the seven pearls (including Sara's pearl in Gaito's castle) to shine brightly and summon yet another illusion of Aqua Regina. While the Black Beauty Sisters and Dark Lovers were distracted by fighting against each other, Aqua Regina secretly set the four mermaids free from the Sisters' trap and gave them a new song before vanishing once more. Eventually, the fight ended in favor of the Black Beauty Sisters, but the sisters were in for a surprise: The four mermaid princesses were back. Their fight against the Dark Lovers had given enough time for the four mermaids to somehow escape their trap (thanks to Aqua Regina), and the mermaids were now ready to punish them. Singing their new song Kodou, the four mermaids not only defeated the Sisters, they also trapped them in a dangerous whirlpool. They screamed at Gaito for help, but since Gaito was angry at their betrayal, he turned them back into anglerfish.

Fortunately, they were turned back into water demons in Episode 54 by their new boss, Mikeru. Mikeru also gave them a new song, Yami No Baroque, which was more powerful than their former song. Mimi and her sister were not as carefree and arrogant as before, however. In fact, they were scared of getting turned back into anglerfish and returning to the dark sea.

Mimi Responding To Sheshe

Throughout the second season, the Black Beauty Sisters continued towards the same goal: defeating and capturing the Mermaid Princesses, this time for Mikeru.

Mimi tries to relieve stress sometimes by popping bubble wrap.

In Episode 79, after Mimi accidentally messed up their latest plan to capture the mermaids, Sheshe scolds her for their failure and her clumsiness. Provoked by Fuku, the sisters got into a fight and Mimi ran away after Sheshe said she wish she never had a sister like Mimi. She goes on land to try and find the mermaid princesses on her own. By sheer coincidence, Mimi ran into Lucia, but neither recognized each other on land. In Pearl Piari, Mimi told the mermaid princesses about her "rivals." Lucia, Hanon, and Rina encouraged her to fight her "rivals" and to never give up no matter what.

After accepting the advice from her new "friends", she decides to fight the mermaid princesses on her own. She got to sing her own solo version of Yami No Baroque. but since their songs don't harm mermaids if they don't sing them together, it had no effect on Lucia, Hanon and Rina. She tries to fight back even after the mermaid songs were weakening her. Eventually, she couldn't stand the songs anymore and was blasted away after getting attacked with the mermaid's Love Shower Pitch, causing her to fall unconscious. Luckily, Sheshe who was watching the scene happen from far away, came to her rescue. Sheshe was very angry at the mermaid princesses for hurting Mimi and used the ball of light to create water tornados to attack them. But Mimi soon started displaying signs of lethal pain, forcing Sheshe to cancel her attack and retreat to heal her. Sheshe took Mimi to the bottom of the ocean and used the ball of light to heal Mimi. Knowing this would get Sheshe punished by Mikeru, Mimi told Sheshe to not heal her. But Sheshe did not care whether they get punished or not, as long as they are with each other. The episode ends with Mimi crying and hugging Sheshe tightly.

In Episode 85, Mimi started to slowly fear that her "friends" were actually the mermaid princesses, which is further proven when she recognized the penguin as one of the mermaids' allies on land. When she saw the mermaid princesses actually turn back into their human forms, her fears were finally confirmed and she bursts into tears. Realizing that the first friends she had ever made on land were her worst enemies in the sea, she quickly retreated out of guilt and sadness, leaving Sheshe confused and startled.

Sheshe later found Mimi sitting by herself and asking her what happened. Mimi just told her that she can't fight them anymore. Unfortunately, Fuku interrupted them before Mimi could explain to her sister what happened. Fuku taunted and explained to them that he had never trusted them from the start, and they were only intended as sacrifices all along.

Mimi and Sheshe were very shocked, and even more so when they were transported to Mikeru's dimension. When Mikeru appeared and confronted them, Mimi pleaded Mikeru to only "punish" her and spare Sheshe. Sheshe comforted Mimi and told her that even though they aren't going to win, they will show him the power of the Black Beauty Sisters. Mimi agreed and they made their last stand by singing their first song Kuro No Kyousoukyou. Mikeru began panting and screaming in pain. He opened up his wings and proceeded to absorb the Black Beauty Sisters, causing the Sisters to scream in pain.

While they were being absorbed, Mimi managed to confess to Sheshe about how she feels the happiest when she is singing with Sheshe. Sheshe said that she had felt the same way also. They shared one last hug as their life energy continued to get absorbed into Mikeru. Mimi told Sheshe that if they were ever reborn, she wants to introduce some friends to her, Sheshe said lightheartedly that when Mimi had made friends like that. Mimi added that if she had met her friends, she would be shocked. Sheshe simply replied that she would want to meet them too. Those were their last words before Mikeru completely absorbed them.

Sheshe and Mimi's death

Sheshe and Mimi made one last appearance in Episode 91, where they briefly sang Yami No Baroque once more, and they later sang Legend Of Mermaid with the rest of the entire cast. It is still unknown whether they were revived by Aqua Regina after Mikeru returned to The Ancients, or if they were still dead.

Personality[]

Mimi has a rather childish and cute personality compared to her older sister. She is often shown blushing and gasping whenever Sheshe touches her. She also plays with bubble wrap to relieve stress.

Mimi Blushing

Sheshe teasing Mimi

Mimi is a bit masochistic as she can become very excited when she and her sister are about to cause a tsunami, destroy buildings, harm the lives of people etc. She also blushes when experiencing pain from the mermaids' songs (Especially in Episode 35), and gets excited when thinking about Mikeru punishing her in Episode 58.

She can be very arrogant and just as mean as her sister when necessary. But deep down, she loves her sister very much and will do anything for her, even if it will cost her own life.

Appearance[]

Mimi has light blue hair with red eyes. She also has dark blue horns that stick out of her hair. She has ears that look like fish fins. Like her sister, she also has a yellow lure on her forehead. Her hair covers it most of the time, sometimes shown when she is singing.

Mimi wears gray spiked bracelets on her arms and a collar on her neck. She wears a blue corset with black short-shorts and has a microphone for a tail.

She has two human forms:

  • Human form 1 (Shown in Episode 68) She has human ears and red eyes. She wears a blue top with gray shorts. She retains her spiked accessories in this form.
  • Human form 2 (Shown in Episode 79) Her hair becomes a more grayish blue. She has human ears and her eyes are brown instead of red. She wears a black beanie and a black dress with white stripes. She also wears glasses.

Relationships[]

Sheshe[]

Throughout the series, Sheshe and Mimi are shown to have an extremely close, incestuous relationship. Sheshe has a habit of suddenly pulling Mimi's chin close to her face as if they were about to kiss, and Mimi would blush in return. They're constantly seen holding onto each other tightly even when walking or singing. In Episode 48, after Mimi was slapped by Gaito, Sheshe immediately went to comfort her, suggesting that they should act on their own and leave him, all the while she was caressing Mimi's slapped cheek tenderly.

In Season 2, Sheshe still continues to act amorously with Mimi, always trying to keep her happy by coming up with battle plans and reassuring her that they'll be able to capture the mermaid princesses. This continued on until Episode 79, when the two are seen arguing for the first time and Sheshe had hurt Mimi's feelings. After Mimi had left home, she was determined to prove her independence to Sheshe. Even when she was losing her power to the mermaids' song, she tried hard to fight back for the sake of Sheshe, which eventually led to the two sisters reconciling after Sheshe came to rescue her.

Lucia, Hanon and Rina[]

When Sheshe and Mimi first became water demons, they were ordered to capture the mermaid princesses by Gaito. Upon their first encounter, the two of them initially saw the mermaids as powerless and pathetic. This was proven when they were shown to be immune to the Lucia's, Hanon's, and Rina's singing initially and causing great pain to the mermaids in return when they sang Kuro No Kyousoukyou. However, their arrogance proved to be their undoing, as they were defeated in Episode 28 after the trio received upgrades from Aqua Regina. They also dislike the mermaids for causing them pain. As the series progressed, Sheshe and Mimi's detest for them gradually increased.

In Episode 79, after leaving home for the first time due to her argument with Sheshe, Mimi then ran into Lucia and she spent the night in Pearl Piari, disguised as a human girl. Mimi told the Mermaid Princesses about her "rivals", Lucia, Hanon and Rina encouraged her to fight her "rivals" and don't give up no matter what.

Later on, she would sneak up to the surface to watch her "friends" from time to time, not realizing their true identities were the mermaid princesses. In Episode 85, when Mimi recognized Hippo with Lucia in her human form, she began to suspect, and also fear, that the friends she made on land were also her worst enemies below the sea. Throughout the episode, she had conflicted feelings about whether she should continue fighting them. Her worst fears were finally confirmed at the climax when they were close to defeating them. Mimi broke down and, telling her sister she couldn't bring herself to do it, fled the scene.

Gaito[]

Mimi is a mercenary of Gaito, but unlike the Dark Lovers, she is not in love with Gaito, a trait that Sheshe also shares. Like her sister, Mimi is also transformed by Gaito's spell as her true form is a blue anglerfish.

Michel[]

In Season 2, Sheshe and Mimi both work for Mikeru after he transformed them into water demons once again. Unlike how they had formerly served their previous master, Sheshe and Mimi were constantly fearful of Mikeru after what happened last season.

Powers[]

Besides using their songs as an attack towards the mermaid princesses, Sheshe and Mimi both have a lot of powers, although Mimi's attacks are usually not as strong as Sheshe's.

List of Mimi's powers:

  • "Deep Sea Flash" (Shown in Episode 27 and Episode 49 only)
  • Teleportation
  • Energy Balls (Shown in Episode 49)
  • Creating illusions
  • Causing tsunamis, tornados and storms
  • Blowing bubbles and thorns/spikes from her mouth (Shown in Episode 27 and Episode 59 only)
  • Shooting a ray of light from her hand (Shown in Episode 32 only)
